49ers’ Jeremy Kerley opens up: ‘I wish they would’ ask about Colin Kaepernick

Respect for Colin Kaepernick, disdain for Chan Gailey and fondness for what Kyle Shanahan is doing as San Francisco’s new head coach.

49ers wide receiver Jeremy Kerley shared his feelings — good and bad — about three individuals who have helped shape his NFL career during a Thursday night interview with co-host Phil Savage and me on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Let’s start with Kaepernick. Thirty-eight of Kerley’s career-high 64 receptions last season came after Kaepernick replaced Blaine Gabbert as San Francisco’s starting quarterback in Week 6.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s David O’Brien said on Twitter late Tuesday that Freeman is willing to make the move if it’s best for the Braves that he do so.

Adams, 28, has been on fire at the plate since coming over from the Cardinals in a trade May 20. He was expected to be just a stopgap until Freeman returned from a broken wrist, but he has become a lineup fixture instead. In 28 games before Tuesday, the left-handed-hitting Adams was slashing .306/.361/.658 with 10 home runs.

The Freeman-Adams discussion is also a product of the Braves’ need to upgrade their production at the hot corner. Atlanta’s third basemen were hitting .234 with a .622 OPS and six home runs prior to Tuesday’s game.

Clearly the Braves are willing to sacrifice defense to make that happen. Freeman hasn’t played the position in 10 years, when he was in rookie ball, although MLB.com noted he played there regularly in high school. Adams has no professional experience at third.

Todd Bertuzzi Limited Jersey Freeman isn’t close to returning, so the Braves have plenty of time to think this over or even scrap it if Adams slumps or draws sufficient trade interest before the July 31 deadline. Still, the idea that Freeman would have to move for Adams is an attention-grabber.

While participating on a Sports for Equality panel during Super Bowl week in nearby Houston, Jenkins and Boldin became aware of a drive to create a new youth football organization, met Barber and some of his players.

Due to a rule that disallows rookies from practicing until after the end of their university’s final exams, McCaffrey hadn’t been on the practice field since rookie minicamp at the beginning of May. Stanford’s school schedule meant McCaffrey wasn’t able to practice until after June 14.

The Brewers’ slugger hit his 19th home run of the season, only this one was a little bit more impactful than his other 17, even more impactful than the one he hit Thursday night.

Thames hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth inning on Thursday off Cardinals closer Seung Hwan Oh to help give the visiting Brewers a 6-4 win. Then Friday night he hit an opposite field solo blast in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Padres completing a dramatic comeback that started all the way back in the first inning.

The Padres were ahead 4-0 before the Brewers even got a chance to bat and it looked dire from the very beginning. But Milwaukee got things going with a Travis Shaw home run and slowly chipped their way back and forced extra innings.

The Warriors can win without playing their best basketball

This Cavs team has hope, and they know how to climb out of a hole. The Warriors can win without playing their best basketball, but they must enter Game 5 like they are facing elimination, even if that’s not the case. Otherwise, Golden State fans will be feeling a sense of deja vu.

Cleveland drilled Golden State 137-116. The Cavaliers had 86 points at halftime and drilled a NBA Finals record 24 3-pointers. The series heads back to Golden State on Monday. We all know the count 鈥?3-1. Warriors star Stephen Curry shut down the chatter about whether that 3-1 lead stirs up anything from last year.

Man, different team, man, Curry said after Game 4. Obviously we have haven’t felt this feeling walking off the court with a loss in a while, but we have done a good job of bouncing back and being resilient all year and obviously learning from all different experiences we have been through.

Curry is right. It’s much different. This isn’t last year, and at this point, there isn’t a need to revisit last year. The Warriors were one victory away from blowing through the NBA playoffs with a perfect 16-0 record. Cleveland at least spoiled that, salvaged a home victory and the teams played in overdrive all night in a chippy game we expected all along. Golden State won Game 4 last season to take a 3-1 lead. This time, Warriors coach Steve Kerr was asked the same question. He had a sensible two-part answer.

It’s similar in that it’s 3-1, Kerr said. We felt great about last year, up 3-1. That’s kind of what you want to do, right? When you have home court ideally you take care of business at home and get a split on the road. So we’re in a great spot, and now we have to capitalize.

Dirk Nowitzki won’t let his kids play football

Dirk Nowitzki may live and play in a city with arguably the most iconic football franchise in the world in a state known for the game, but that doesn’t mean he wants his kids to strap on a helmet — ever.

In a recent interview with Fox 4 in Dallas, the Mavericks star said he wants his children (one daughter and two sons) to decide what sports they pursue, as long as it’s not football.

According to ESPN.com, the Cavaliers may turn to Derrick Williams in Game 4. The rarely used power forward has played just eight minutes this series, but the 6-8 Williams could be utilized as an imposing defender on Kevin Durant.

Williams has shown glimpses of double-double-level talent throughout is career, but he had been deemed surplus by the Cavs this season.

Cavs coach Tyronn Lue has struggled to find the right combination of defenders to stop Golden State’s high-powered offense. Perhaps he found something on film that he thinks will work.

At this point, anything is worth a try. The Cavs have nothing to lose, and if Williams can just hold Durant under 25 points it will be viewed as a success.

Cleveland fans do not want to see their beloved team get swept at home, so Lue will have to find a way to motivate his team heading into Friday night’s potentially decisive Game 4.

Thompson looks like himself on offense. The Warriors sharpshooter heads to the bench with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting (3 of 6 from 3-point range). Bad news for Cleveland.

By the way, here’s a nasty no-look pass from Curry to Shaun Livingston for an easy dunk.

Is NBA Finals’ Cavs vs. Warriors III the greatest ‘three-match’ in sports history?

Limited Womens Brandon Jennings Jersey Cavaliers vs. Warriors III is here, the first time two teams have met in the NBA Finals in three consecutive seasons.

It’s a three-match for the ages. That automatically makes it one of the best postseason trilogies in sports history. Others come to mind, including the Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson Celtics-Lakers showdowns in the 1980s. That’s the most obvious comparison to this year’s NBA Finals.

The Cavs-Warriors trilogy, however, has taken place over three consecutive seasons. That’s rare across the major American sports at the conference championship level or higher.

Here’s a look at 14 sports trilogies in which teams met in three consecutive postseasons in either the conference championship round or championship:

Limited Womens Sharrif Floyd Jersey The Rockets would need to make a move to clear room for Griffin, but this is the kind of move that is in Daryl Morey’s wheelhouse. They need an upgrade at power forward, and if they can get a player of Griffin’s quality without giving up much (Ryan Anderson, for example), they’d be an offensively loaded team that could at least give the Warriors an endlessly entertaining offensive series.

Not that Griffin has delivered much for the Clippers 鈥?injuries have mostly torpedoed his time in LA. But it’s worth the risk. A fresh start helped Rockets reserve Eric Gordon, and maybe it’d help Griffin.

Kobe Bryant reminds Jalen Rose of his 81-point game in hilarious commercial

Leonard Floyd Game Jersey On January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant dropped 81 points on the Raptors, and he did most of his damage while Jalen Rose was guarding him. Toronto’s coach at the time, Sam Mitchell, wouldn’t put a double team on Bryant, so Rose ended up getting embarassed most of the game.

As time has passed, Bryant dropping 81 on Rose has become an internet meme of sorts. Lakers fans, or Rose haters, will often send tweets at the former basketball player reminding him of that game. He typically responds with a block, as many have experienced.

Justin Williams Game Jersey So taking in these facts, you can understand why a commercial starring these two would be high entertainment. Thankfully for us, we were treated to such an ad Monday.

If the Celtics end up staying at No. 3 鈥?more on that in a minute 鈥?it seems likely the team will pick between Jayson Tatum or Josh Jackson. Sources throughout the NBA in the early portion of the draft process indicated that the Celtics were thought to have been locked in on four players: Fultz, Lonzo Ball, Jackson and Tatum.

DEVENEY: What does this trade tell us about Ainge’s plan?

With Ball seeming to be a likely pick by the Lakers at No. 2 鈥?and the fact that, per Adam Himmelsbach, the Celtics’ depth in the backcourt played a role in the trade 鈥?Jackson and Tatum are the two guys to watch. They are No. 2 and No. 3 on my board here at Sporting News.

Regardless of the pick at No. 3, this might be a risky deal for the Celtics from a value perspective due to the protections on the future pick they acquired and the cluster of bad teams currently in the NBA. Sure, this could be the No. 3 pick this year and the No. 2 pick next season if things broke right, but it could be much worse.

The Falcons (13-5) picked up right where they left off against the Packers in October

Ryan was nearly picked off a couple of times, but Packers defensive backs Marwin Evans and LaDarius Gunter mistimed jumps late in the first half. Evans, especially, badly mistimed his jump on Ryan’s throw to the end zone. Evans, an undrafted rookie from Utah State, was only playing because fellow rookie Kentrell Brice, who played well last week against the Cowboys, was injured on the opening kickoff.

Instead of stopping the Falcons with a minute remaining in the half, the drive continued and ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones with seven seconds to play in the second quarter.

The Falcons (13-5) picked up right where they left off against the Packers in October, when Mohamed Sanu scored the game-winning touchdown in a 33-32 victory. Sanu scored the first touchdown Sunday as the Falcons capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a 2-yard flip from Ryan.

Doing most of the damage for the Falcons was Jones, who absolutely had his way with Gunter. Jones caught nine passes for 180 yards and two scores. He also drew multiple defensive holding calls on Gunter. Despite one of those holding calls, Gunter was still unable to stop Jones from exploding for a 73-yard touchdown on Atlanta’s second play from scrimmage in the second half to give the Falcons a 31-0 lead.

Ezekiel Elliott is just getting started for the Cowboys, and he’s already in elite company. Based on voting by his fellow NFL players, Elliott is Sporting News’ runaway Rookie of the Year for 2016.

He is the first Cowboys player to win SN’s award since Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett in 1977, and the third overall. The other winner also was a running back, Calvin Hill, in 1969. In the bigger picture, Elliott has a strong case as the best rookie running back of all time.

Giants deny team trashed charter plane on return from Green Bay

So what is termination pay We’ll let the folks at OverTheCap explain it:

Termination pay is an in-season salary guarantee that is automatically given to veteran players as a provision of the CBA. There are actually two types of termination pay. The primary one guarantees a player’s entire Paragraph 5 salary for the season. To be eligible, you have to make the roster for the first game of the season and have not collected termination pay in the past. If [a player is] released, the team owes [him] the remainder of [his] salary for the year if the player puts in a claim for the amount.

This means that because of Brown’s one-game suspension, Bullock will receive his entire $675,000 base salary instead of just a single game check. A player can use the termination-pay rule only once in his career, and it makes sense for Bullock to use it now since it would be rare for him to get such an opportunity again.

In addition to the $675,000 he’ll get from the Giants, he’ll have received $159,000 in total game checks from the Steelers and Bengals. That comes out to $834,000 for the season, which isn’t bad for someone who played for three teams and made only eight field goals this season.

Boston man arrested for false alarm at Steelers hotel

Poilce arrested a man early Sunday after he pulled a false alarm at the Pittsburgh Steelers team hotel in Boston.

According to ESPN, the suspect pulled the alarm near a hotel exit, then jumped in a waiting car with two other men.

Massachusetts State Police quickly stopped the car and arrested the 25-year-old East Boston man. He is charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and pulling a false fire alarm.

ESPN reports that although firefighters checked the hotel near Boston’s Logan International Airport, the Steelers were not evacuated. But several players were awakened by the disturbance.

The Steelers will face the Patriots at 6:40 p.m. ET in the AFC Championship game.

The Raiders are the fifth seed and will play Saturday at Houston. The Texans (9-7) lost at Tennessee, but had already clinched the AFC South and the No. 4 seed.

Teams want to enter the playoffs hot and the Packers and Patriots enter the playoffs riding six-game win streaks while the Steelers have won seven straight.

Matt McGloin steps into a seemingly impossible situation, replacing Derek Carr, the Raidersa’ MVP candidate and the main reason theya’re fighting to win the AFC West, among other prizes. Give him credit for doing his best, but no way do the Raiders play as well without Carr. Yet with the problems the Broncos have on offense (and on defense in trying to cover for them), they should have enough to seal this deal. Raiders, 26-18
