After missing out on unrestricted free agent Ryan Suter, the Detroit Red turned their attention to his former Nashville defense partner, restricted free agent Weber, their effort to fill the gaping hole on their blue line. The Red contacted one of Weber’s agents, Epp, and had numerous conversations, but the talks did not reach the stage where they were able to tender a formal offer. Weber reportedly visited Detroit, San Jose, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia. He chose to pursue a deal with the Flyers. Philadelphia, on Wednesday, signed Weber to a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet. Once again, the Red tried to reel a big fish but were left lamenting the one that got away. Add Weber to the list that includes Andrew Luck Authentic Womens Jersey Suter, Zach Parise and, all likelihood, Nash, as there appears to be little chance trade its franchise player to Detroit. The Red remain the hunt for power forward Doan, but he’s hoping to re-sign with Phoenix.

Big, talented and tough, Weber, a finalist for the Norris Trophy the past two seasons, would have been the best possible replacement for Nicklas Lidstrom, even better than Suter. Now, Weber likely never be a Red Wing. Nashville has seven days to match the offer. It’s a huge investment, with a lot of up-front money, but a $7 million cap hit is pretty good for a player of his stature. Trading for Weber was never a viable option for the Red, contrary to a TSN report. The Predators had no intention of dealing him to their Central Division rival and no trade talks took place. Detroit’s only options of landing Weber were to sign him to offer sheet, with the hopes Nashville would not match, taking the compensation instead, or that Weber signed a one-year deal with the Predators and became unrestricted 201But, the new CBA could feature a lower salary cap, a limit on the length of contracts and increased age for unrestricted free agency. Weber was wise to get his mega deal while he could. The Red have ample salary cap space but have not yet been able to fill their primary needs – a top-four defenseman and a top-six forward. Options are extremely limited. The Red, under general manager Ken Holland, have never tendered offer sheet to a restricted free agent. They have no team policy against it, but seem to feel it does nothing but inflate prices for others and is pointless. Plus, with the deep unrestricted free agent classes of the past and a talented roster, the Red didn’t need to explore the Group II route. But, times have changed the parity-laden NHL. That is why the Red explored the possibility of signing Weber to offer sheet. Once again, they believe they gave it a good shot but were left with nothing to show for it.

The most infamous rheumatologist in all of sports is out as the NFL’s chief medical officer. Dr. Elliot Pellman has agreed to retire, commissioner Roger Goodell announced in a memo sent to all 32 teams on Wednesday. It’s cited as a move to Sergei Nemchinov Jersey help rebuild trust with the players, cutting ties with the former head of the league’s Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee and the point man for denying the links between head trauma and long-term neurological disease like CTE that’s caused a health crisis among retired NFL players.

His stance made it even harder to reconcile keeping Pellman on the payroll, and it looks like the NFL finally understood the contradiction.

These are only steps, positive ones, but only the first of many the NFL has to take to rebuild the damage caused by Pellman and his ilk, many of whom are still affiliated with the league and downplaying the impact on player health.

“I’d like to still be playing football,” Romo told Peter Jackel of the Racine Journal Times earlier in July. “Maybe 10 years is stretching it a little. We’ll see.”

If Romo actually earned playing time until he was 46, it would be unprecedented. George Blanda is the only player in NFL history with a pass attempt after his 45th birthday, but he transitioned from splitting time as a quarterback and kicker to just a kicking role in the final years of his career. Once a starter for the Chicago Bears and Houston Oilers, Blanda threw only a handful of passes in his last few seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

Romo has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, suffering multiple collarbone fractures that cost him all but four games in 2015. However, his health and play during the 2016 offseason has made him optimistic that the end isn’t on the horizon.

“The reality of it is that time usually tells you when you’re done,” Romo told Jackel. “I know I’m playing some of my best football this offseason. It’s been very enjoyable. I’m pretty excited about what lies ahead.”

Even playing for three more years would put Romo in an exclusive club, as Peyton Manning became only the eighth player to start eight or more games at age 39 or older. A few managed to keep putting up good numbers for a little while longer, but it typically didn’t last for long.

“When an NFL player doesn’t have something to play for other than just a game, and somebody else does,” Arians said, “you’re going to get beat every time.”

Outside linebacker Dwight Freeney will shoot for a 15th season in the NFL, as he is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The longtime Indianapolis Colts defensive end has found new life as a linebacker over the past three seasons, compiling 12 sacks overall with the San Diego Chargers and Orlando Scandrick Jersey Arizona Cardinals.

Freeney became a free agent at the start of the league year, but seemed like he was content with taking his time deciding where to go for the 2016 season. Isaiah Thomas surprises 14-year-old Celtics fan … twice

When 14-year-old Robbie McNulty saw someone walking toward him on a playground in Cambridge, Massachusetts, last week, he didn’t think it was anything out of the ordinary. The man looked a lot like the usual hoopsters he might encounter while getting up shots at St. Peter’s Park.

“[McNulty] was the only kid there,” Thomas told the Globe. “So I’m like, ‘I’m just going to go get some shots up with him.’ When I walked over, he rebounded his own shot and turned around and I’m like, ‘Can I get a couple shots?’ And he stopped. He didn’t even say a word, like his eyes were so big. He just stopped and froze and I’m like, ‘Pass me the ball.'”

McNulty, who just entered his freshman year of high school, posted the picture on Instagram with a caption that noted, “Isaiah Thomas played basketball with me.” Thomas even replied to the post from his Instagram account writing, “Nice rebounding for u.”
