Yankees among winners off the field, then win on it

Monday was all about new faces in new places. While they were only nine games on the schedule, there was plenty of activity off the field prior to Monday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.

The Yankees were one of the teams to make a splash by acquiring pitchers Sonny Gray from the A’s and Jaime Garcia from the Twins. Gray, who was one of Monday’s prized acquisitions, will make his Yankees debut on Thursday. The Yankees sent Luis Severino to the mound on Monday to face the Tigers and he struck out eight in five innings of New York’s 7-3 win.

After Gonzalez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, the Nationals will send their ace to the hill with Max Scherzer (12-5, 2.23 ERA) squaring off against Miami’s Chris O’Grady (2-1, 3.68).

That led to the hiring of current manager Joe Maddon for the 2015 season.

Sandberg had been with the Phillies, leading their Triple-A team to the International League championship series in his first year. He was named the 2011 minor league manager of the year by Baseball America.

Two years later he found himself managing the Phillies, but resigned midway through the 2015 season with a record of 26-48 and an overall mark of 119-159.

Game Youth Johnathan Hankins Jersey Now that he no longer has to worry about strategy as a manager or focusing on his own play, Sandberg said he actually sees more of the game watching as a fan. And though he was away from the Cubs for five years, he still considers Wrigley Field his second home.

To see everything come together last year the way that it did, and to be able to watch the quality of play, and the players playing the game the right way … the whole 2016 season was a life-changer for me, said Sandberg, who was a 10-time All-Star and won nine Gold Glove awards.

I was viewed differently being part of a World Series championship and wearing a ring around town.

A tweet taught the Rangers’ Yu Darvish he needed to change his pitching delivery

Youth Mike Mitchell Jersey Yu Darvish had a poor outing in his last start against the Marlins, giving up 10 runs in 3.2 innings pitched. A few days after that game, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan said he was told Miami knew what was coming from Darvish because he was unknowingly giving away his pitches.

I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready for the big lights of New York, but I took a chance. And thank God I did. My first year, 1996, you’re obviously playing with some great players. Wade Boggs was on that team. He’s here in the Hall of Fame. There were some other guys that will be here shortly.
Youth Sheldon Richardson Jersey
But just the opportunity not only just to play in New York but just to play with the guys that I was able to play with. I really don’t have enough time to go through them all, but they know who they are. The first year in New York, ’96, you know, playing in the World Series against the Braves, the Braves winning their first two games in New York. We go to Atlanta; they had already had the champagne ready. We knew that. George Steinbrenner came out to say, you guys don’t have a chance. You’re not going to win.

I don’t know if he really meant that, but it worked if he didn’t. Jimmy Leyritz hit a home run late in the game to tie the game for us to go to extra innings, and we ended up winning that game in extra innings, and from that point it was over. I’ll never forget the last out that was made hit to Charlie Hayes, pop fly down the foul line on third base, him catching the ball and raising his hand. I was finally a world champion.

They just don’t ever show up during the playoffs.

The veteran runner gave his reasons for writing each team off his wish list. Cleveland and Jacksonville missed the cut thanks to their reputations as league bottom-feeders. Dallas and Carolina needed a bit more explanation.

Mens Geoff Swaim Jersey The Cowboys, they win. They just don’t ever show up during the playoffs. They always disappear in the playoffs, Williams told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on his Know Them From Adam podcast. I’ve got a great depiction of the Cowboys’ fan base. During the regular season last year, they were on cloud nine. You couldn’t tell them anything because they were going to win the ‘ship — that’s all they said. Fans just got extremely super annoying. Then, the minute they lose, they either got cheated, somebody was hurt — the excuses start flowing. It’s just amazing to me. That fan base just in general can’t handle defeat. Still, to this day, they say that the Dez Bryant catch against the Green Bay Packers was a catch!

He originally ran down the Panthers as well, the team for whom he’d gained 1,515 rushing yards and scored 20 total touchdowns in 2008.

Two years after the trial ended, Simpson was found liable for both murders in a civil suit and was ordered to pay out $33.5 million to the victims’ families.
Mens Kasperi Kapanen Jersey
Simpson has served his minimum sentence, so this was the first time he is eligible for parole. During a hearing in 2013, the board granted him parole on five of the 12 counts on which he was convicted. In Thursday’s hearing, he needed to be granted parole on each of the other seven counts in order to secure his freedom.

I’ve always been a guy that pretty much got along with everybody, Simpson told the parole board as he rambled about the reasons he should be granted parole. I’ve basically lived a conflict-free life.

It looked like the sky was the limit for Lacy at that point

The Packers selected Lacy in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, following a storied college career at Alabama that culminated with him winning Offensive MVP in the 2013 BCS National Championship. At the NFL Combine, he weighed in at 5’11, 231 pounds — a little on the heavy side but certainly not out of the ordinary for a big power back.

Any concern-trolling about Lacy’s weight was quickly brushed aside when the actual games started. He finished his rookie year with 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns on 284 carries, bringing some much-needed balance to a Packers offense that was more reliant than ever on Aaron Rodgers’ arm. Lacy won Offensive Rookie of the Year for his efforts. His next season was just as good, with 1,139 yards, his yards per carry average jumping from 4.1 to 4.6, and his touchdowns increasing from 11 to 13 (nine rushing, four receiving).

It looked like the sky was the limit for Lacy at that point, but the next few years weren’t nearly as rosy.

USA Today is projecting a 10-6 season for the Cardinals after a 7-8-1 record last year, but the question is … uh … why?

The team lost Calais Campbell and Tony Jefferson, among others, on defense during the offseason and is relying on the play of veteran quarterback Carson Palmer and receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who are both likely to retire after the season.

Big playmakers like David Johnson, Tyrann Mathieu, Chandler Jones and Patrick Peterson make Arizona an unlikely choice, but not an impossible one.patriots_119-180x180

Kirk Cousins spit some bars from ‘Hamilton’ during training camp

Darcy Tucker Game Jersey
Kirk Cousins is apparently a big fan of Hamilton. Cousins was mic’d up for Washington’s practice Wednesday, and he took advantage of the opportunity to spit some bars from the popular Broadway show.

The $10 dollar founding father without a father, went a lot farther by working a lot harder, Cousins says.

I don’t want to be critical, but as someone who also drops these bars on a very regular basis, he got the words a little wrong. It’s got a lot farther, not went.

By being a lot smarter, by being a self-starter. By 14, they put him in charge of a trading charter.

Dang it, Kirk. They PLACED him in charge of a trading charter.

Michael Brockers Authentic Jersey So Cousins does have bars. He just doesn’t have the right words, and his flow is nothing to write home about. Still, he seems enthusiastic about it. This is hilarious, and I love Hamilton, so I’m going to give him an A for effort.

A penalty on the Cowboys during the extra point gave the Cardinals the ball at the 1-yard line, so they decided to go for two. After another Dallas penalty, Gabbert bulldozed in for the two-point conversion.

No Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott, bummer. Instead, Kellen Moore and Darren McFadden got the start for the Cowboys. Moore was not Gabbert-esque, which is actually a criticism right now, and the Cowboys went three-and-out.

Don’t expect to see many starters in this game. The Cardinals started with the ball and trotted out … Blaine Gabbert. Wooooo, get excited!

To be fair, Gabbert was dealing on the first possession. His biggest play came on a 35-yard pass to Brittan Golden, but Gabbert was perfect on the drive, completing all three of his passes. Kerwynn Williams put the Cardinals on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run.

LeBron James clowns President Donald Trump, supports Women’s March

Darren Woodson Mens Jersey Once criticized for his perceived silence and lack of involvement in sociopolitical issues, LeBron James feels more comfortable speaking out now than ever.

The four-time MVP, known for his philanthropy in his native Northeast Ohio, was an ardent supporter of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, campaigning alongside her just before the November election. He took to Instagram to express his thoughts in the aftermath of Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the electoral college.

Limited Reggie Lewis Jersey Coach Gregg Popovich routinely discussed how much he trusted Bonner in pressure situations, and he was on the floor for the final minutes of the final game of the 2014 NBA Finals, when the Spurs won their most recent championship.

Of course, Tim Duncan also retired this offseason. Spurs fans liked him, too. And Duncan and Bonner got along in a way that helped guide the Spurs’ easygoing locker room 鈥?and probably extended Bonner’s career a season or two.

Bonner told me last season that I was pulling off the NBA beard-and-flannel look properly. If only I’d known then that it would be the last time we spoke while he was an active NBA player.

When the media reports what he says, I’m not sure why he can get angry about that. But it is, it does boggle the mind how somebody can be so thin-skinned. It’s all obvious, it’s about him. If anything affects him, if it’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ or ‘Hamilton,’ or she got three more million votes than you. (He says) ‘They’re illegal!’ It doesn’t matter what it is, there’s a pattern there. And that’s dangerous.

Dwyane Wade defends LeBron James by piling on Charles Barkley

Dwyane Wade joined the masses Tuesday by offering his take on the LeBron James-Charles Barkley beef.

Wade is obviously going to be biased as he and James have a strong relationship, but his comments are still interesting. He seemed to be surprised with the rest of us that James finally stood up for himself, and he enjoyed seeing it.

“Thank God he finally said something,” Wade said Tuesday, via the Chicago Tribune. “LeBron, a lot of guys take a lot of shots at him for whatever reason. He just has kept his mouth closed and continued to focus on what he needs to. But it’s about time he said something, man. Guys ride him, especially ex-players.”

Wade’s comments are similar to the ones teammate Jimmy Butler said regarding the team last week after a different loss to the Hawks.

Butler said the team played “terrible basketball” in that loss, and it appears not much has changed.

Butler and Wade combined to score 73 of the team’s points Wednesday. Doug McDermott, who came off the bench, was the only only player in double figures with 10 points.

Chicago (23-24) had won its last two games before heading into Wednesday’s loss, so it’s not like the team was in the midst of some fantastic slump. But the two most senior and experienced members of the squad have clearly been unhappy with attitudes in the locker room.

This one has all the signs of getting ugly with Rajon Rondo still unhappy sitting on the bench. When two teammates call out the rest of its members someone is going to get angry.

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg must be wondering why he left his comfortable job at Iowa State right about now.

He has to dedicate himself to basketball more

NBA trade rumors: As Raptors seek new identity, efforts to deal Jonas Valanciunas still come up short
Youth Bruce Irvin Jersey
Back in 2012 at the London Olympics, Lithuania national coach Kestutis Kemzura expressed some of the concerns he had about his young big man, Jonas Valanciunas, who was then 20 years old and coming into his first season in the NBA. Valanciunas had struggled in the tournament, and Kemzura told Sporting News, Sometimes, he wants to come in and do everything right away. In his head, he is working too fast. He is young, that happens.

Four years later, at the Rio Olympics last summer, Kemzura’s criticism of Valanciunas — who averaged just 6.7 points and 7.0 rebounds — was echoed by new coach Jonas Kazlauskas in much sharper terms.

Youth Jurickson Profar Jersey He has to dedicate himself to basketball more, Kazlauskas said. He was also asked why Valanciunas was struggling, and said, You’ll have to ask Valanciunas.

Acquiring Korver gives the Cavs one of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history. He provides instant offense off the bench and draws defenders’ eyes every time moves without the ball. Among players who attempt at least three catch-and-shoot 3-pointers per game, Korver is tied with Stephen Curry and Allen Crabbe for the second-highest 3-point percentage (45.5) behind only Otto Porter Jr. (46.6), per NBA.com.

With Kyrie Irving and LeBron James driving to the basket and Korver on the perimeter, opposing defenses face a brutal dilemma.

He’s so important to us, James said. Korver gives us another option to keep defenses honest. You have to pick your poison. If you collapse on me or Kyrie then you’re leaving him open. If you pay too much attention to him you already know what it is.

Cavs fan Justin Bieber played pick-up game in Steph Curry uniform

Does Justin Bieber have a new favorite NBA team?

The pop star, a known Cavaliers fan, recently shared a photo of himself on Instagram playing a pick-up basketball game in a full Steph Curry uniform while visiting Australia.

Is Bieber a bandwagoner? Or did he perhaps decide to switch teams after getting booed at the NBA Finals last year for picking LeBron James and the Cavs to win?

Tatum also moves up the board after a terrific final month of college basketball. Tatum has figured things out on this level and become the weapon that he was expected to be coming into the year. From Feb. 15 onward, Tatum averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for the Blue Devils while shooting 48 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3 and 89 percent from the foul line.

Put that into conjunction with a kid who is widely known to have a sterling reputation to pair with a hard-working personality, and it’s not out of the question that he gets into conversation for No. 1 overall if Duke goes on a run and he leads the way.

Jackson falls a touch here mostly due to the rise of Ball and Tatum. He’s still the same level prospect: a do-it-all wing who can score on or off ball, create plays for others through passing and play with an elite level motor. He’s still the first high-major freshman wing to put up averages of 16 points, six rebounds and three assists per game since Dwyane Wade (who did it in a Conference USA that was the No. 7 league in the country).steelers_124

Athletics’ Billy Beane: We hope to keep new players with stadium rebuild

Athletics executive vice president Billy Beane has his eye on two prizes: Successfully rebuilding the team and creating the ultimate ballpark.
Womens Franco Harris Jersey
Beane said as the organization scouts for the perfect place to build their new stadium, he has already started on a full rebuild of the roster.
Womens Omer Asik Jersey
We need to be disciplined with [a rebuild], particularly with how aligned with what we’re trying to do in the community as far as a stadium. There’s only one way to open a stadium successfully, and that’s with a good, young team, Beane told reporters, via ESPN.

As far as this year, it’s hard to envision a scenario where something is going to change overnight and he’s going to be able to come in here and contribute to help us win games, given the down time and where he is, Huntington said. Again, for next year, it’s uncertain. We’ll see how the offseason plays out.

Kang was arrested in December in his native South Korea and charged with driving under the influence for the third time. Due to his repeated violations, a court sentenced him in March to eight months in jail, with the term suspended for two years.

The 30-year-old infielder hoped the latter part of the sentence would allow him to rejoin the Pirates in time for the regular season, but he has been unable to secure a visa to enter the United States despite getting assistance in the effort from MLB and the players’ association.
