Raiders’ Sean Smith arrested on felony assault charges from July 4 incident

Sean Smith is facing up to seven years in prison if convicted of felony assault charges.

The 30-year-old Raiders cornerback was arrested Thursday and charged with two felonies stemming from a July 4 incident involving his sister’s boyfriend.

The Giants issued a statement Saturday saying they had been informed of the situation.

“We were made aware of the Michael Bowie situation Saturday afternoon,” the statement read. “We immediately notified NFL security. Michael will not make the trip for our game in Cleveland as we gather more information on this issue.”

According to the Tulsa World, police say Bowie grabbed his girlfriend by the neck during an argument and threw her to the ground. He then allegedly broke two TVs and caused other property damage.

Bowie, who played collegiately at Oklahoma State and Northeastern State, was a seventh-round pick by the Seahawks in 2013. He hasn’t played in an NFL game since that season, when he started eight games as a rookie. The 6-5, 320-pound tackle signed with the Giants in January. He’s listed as the backup to left tackle Ereck Flowers on the team’s depth chart.

Austin had never had more than 473 receiving yards in a given year when the Rams decided to make him one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL. Essentially mimicking the mistake the Seahawks made with Percy Harvin a few years ago, the Rams overpriced Austin’s ability to run and return. After signing the big deal, Austin had just 668 yards from scrimmage and is now the third best receiver on the team despite being the highest paid.seahawks_100

Derrick Rose, Cavaliers in ‘serious talks’ for 1-year deal, per report

Former NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose is in serious talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst. The deal would put Rose as Kyrie Irving’s backup and place him alongside four-time MVP and three-time NBA champion LeBron James.

In an interesting twist, the Los Angeles Lakers are also interested in Rose’s services as a free agent. He could potentially join Magic Johnson’s cast of young, athletic players, including rookie Lonzo Ball, and wings Brandon Ingram and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Limited Kids Dave Hollins Jersey As in many successful investigations, there IS video evidence in this case. Unbeknownst to Embiid and Meek Mill, they were being recorded when they tried and failed to catch one of the home run shots (this was a nationally televised event, after all).

Ooph. That’s pretty embarrassing, especially when you consider how much taller Embiid is than everyone else in the stands. With that much of a height advantage, how could he let the ball escape?

While we obviously want to believe that Embiid is capable of catching a ball in the stands — he is a professional athlete — all the video evidence points to the contrary. Surely, if Embiid, a famous basketball player, and Meek Mill, a once-notable rapper, had caught a ball at the Home Run Derby, someone would have filmed it. But instead, we just have an embarrassing video of the duo missing.

It seems more likely that fans GAVE these balls to Embiid in a conspiracy to help him save face on social media. But as he should have known — the truth always comes out.

This Lakers fan got the Big Baller Brand logo shaved into his head

People can claim to back up LaVar Ball’s Big Baller Brand. Whether they do it with a sense of irony or not, there’s no chance you’re a supporter of the triple Bs like this Laker fan at the NBA Summer League.
Matt Forte Authentic Jersey
The dude has the logo shaved on the back of his head! This is an incredible feat considering Lonzo Ball has barely played one exhibition game as an NBA player. There have been people who have gotten Kobe on their scalp. But Kobe played for two decades in the NBA. One Spurs fan even got Boban Marjanovic on his head when the center was a rookie.
Joe Thuney Authentic Jersey
If anything, this just proves that Lonzo is ahead of the curve. He’s averaging a custom fan haircut literally every game he’s played in the league. Soon, there will be a season’s worth of these haircuts. Okay, maybe not. But if you don’t have the triple Bs by the fade, are you even a big baller?

The third pillar of the Suns’ kiddie core arrived just a few weeks ago, and he’s already putting his stamp on the franchise.

Of all the players they could have taken in the loaded 2017 draft, Phoenix saw Josh Jackson as the best fit for them. Jackson’s toughness, edge, and grit were exactly the qualities McDonough felt the Suns needed to augment Booker, Chriss, and Bender.

He’s beyond multi-talented, Watson said.

Most players in the NBA have a great first move they use to explode for a bucket. Jackson has a first, second, and third move, which you see out of elite point guards, but rarely from a 3-man.

Kyrie Irving trade haul might not be what LeBron James wants for Cavaliers

The Cavaliers are scrambling to find the right return for dealing Kyrie Irving. They want young players to build a new foundation upon in case LeBron James leaves, according to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Cavs have yet to get a commitment from James beyond next season, according to the report. They’ve seen him shift gears enough to know what his exit strategy looks like and they’re doing their best to prepare for it.
Brian Dawkins Mens Jersey
Cleveland is determined to get an elite young player for Irving, which means this: The trade plan the Cavaliers would have prioritized, with James committed for the long term — veterans to surround James and draft picks — isn’t in motion.

It’s an excuse to explain away a loss. Indiana once built an exciting, competitive team around George. That run ended years ago, and the Pacers have struggled to rekindle anything special. That’s not the Lakers’ fault.

So punishing them for George’s exit strategy — even if those Lakers discussed it with him — is pointless. Because Indiana already traded George, a positive tampering verdict changes nothing. It is simply vengeance.
Patrick Kerney Game Jersey
How absurd it would be if a ruling from the league prevented the Lakers from signing George in 2018. None of the three parties would be happy. The Pacers wouldn’t have George, the Lakers would have seen their plan go up in smoke, and George wouldn’t be able to sign with his hometown team. Some other team — maybe the Thunder — would win his services.

Minor League teams are embracing the solar eclipse with special uniforms

On Monday, as the moon passes over the sun and blocks out the sky through one path of the country, seven minor league baseball teams will be affected by the timing in various parts of the country.

They are the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Idaho Falls Chukars, Bowling Green Hot Rods, Nashville Sounds, Greenville Drive, Columbia Fireflies and Charleston RiverDogs. To celebrate the occasion, and for some teams work around the delay caused by the eclipse, the organizations are breaking out some special uniforms and events.

You can see the full list of events for each team with a Monday game (only six of them do) here. The special events range from programs put on by NASA scientists to pre-game educational events to a mid-game delay for a game specifically played in the morning to revolve around the event.

Friday’s game action begins with the international side of the bracket. Hills Little League from Sydney, Australia will take on Tokyo Kitasuna Little League from Japan in a 2 p.m. ET game from Volunteer Stadium, one of two ballparks used for the Little League World Series.

The final game of the night is a matchup in the United States bracket. North State Little League from Greenville, N.C. represents the Southeast, battling kids from Sioux Falls Little League in South Dakota, representing the Midwest. Those two teams will play at Lamade Stadium at 8 p.m.

The winners on Friday will advance to play Thursday’s winners on Sunday. The teams that lose on Friday will play in elimination games on Saturday. The Little League World Series is a double-elimination tournament.redskins_013_4c707372ac0b5e38-180x180

This is because 756 home runs are a lot of home runs.

He will be 46 years old when this happens. The year will be 2037. Players in the womb right now will be in the major leagues. That’s if he maintains his current pace, which began when he was preternaturally young and unspeakably talented.

So before you take to the internet to argue about Barry Bonds, before you focus on the performance-enhancing drugs or make a point of not focusing on them, make that sustained whistling sound for a little bit. Because, good gravy, 756 home runs is a lot of home runs.

Before I go, I’m going to type 756 periods in honor of this accomplishment, counting out loud while I do it.

Same dilemma as the Brewers — call it comingoutofnowhereitis — with a little bit of a twist. The Twins are 47-45, good for second place in the AL Central. They’re half-a-game back of a wild card. They have Miguel Sano blossoming into a star and a lineup filled with capable, solid hitters. They were building to something, and it’s possible that they just arrived a year or two early, and they should go all in.

Except, at the risk of being the new-orthodoxy pedant in the house, the Twins are 40-52 if you look at their expected record based on runs scored and runs allowed. Normally, I’m keen to look at the problem pitchers who were removed, or the hitters who have already lost their jobs, and figure that the overperformance has actually helped them make moves with a little urgency, which makes their continued contention something of a self-fulfilled prophecy.

St. Louis scored 9 runs in the 8th inning without recording an out

Entering the 8th inning against the Chicago Cubs on Friday afternoon, St. Louis was down 3-2 and looking for some offense to lift them over the Cubbies and net the team a much-needed win.

While it wouldn’t be impossible for Granderson to find another home after this year for another season or two, the likelihood of him getting to go where he’s comfortable and can play often is slim. He’s sporting a WAR of only 0.9, down from last year’s 2.5. While that number isn’t the end-all-be-all of his career, it’s an accurate signifier of the precipitous drop of his statistics pretty much across the board.

Elite Womens Deacon Jones Jersey While they’ll certainly miss Correa’s bat (he’s hitting a nice .320/.400/.566 with a .966 OPS and a 165 OPS+) and solid defense (a .978 fielding percentage with only seven errors on the season), his replacement is the versatile Marwin Gonzalez, whose offense is nothing to scoff at either.
Limited Youth Dikembe Mutombo Jersey
Gonzalez has played every position besides pitcher and catcher for the Astros and is primarily a shortstop, so he will serve as a more-than-good-enough replacement during Correa’s absence. He also has a line of .311/.393/.580 with a .973 OPS and an OPS+ of 166, so that’s nothing to scoff at either.

If Brock Holt’s concussion issues are behind him, he’s an option, but Holt at his healthiest and best is still a utility player who can step in as necessary. Boston’s answer to its third base problem, at least for 2017, is likely someone not even in the organization yet. With the trade deadline just weeks away, we probably won’t have to wait long to see who is going to take over for Sandoval.

Martellus Bennett, Doug Baldwin support Michael Bennett’s national anthem protest

The backlash has continued against players who have not stood for the national anthem, including Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.

Before Seattle’s preseason opener against Chargers on Sunday, Bennett sat while the anthem was played, furthering the movement started by Colin Kaepernick a year ago.

The deal adds Crabbe to a young, talented Nets backcourt that includes Jeremy Lin and D’Angelo Russell. Crabbe is locked up for the next two seasons under that hefty contract with a player option in 2019-20, but he did waive his trade kicker, according to Wojnarowski. It’s still a steep price to pay for a player who averaged 10.7 points in 28.5 minutes per game last season, particularly when you consider the Trail Blazers had a significantly worse offensive rating with him on the floor. However, Crabbe did shoot 44.4 percent from 3-point range on nearly four attempts per game in 2016-17, and perhaps Nets coach Kenny Atkinson can continue developing the 25-year-old on the team’s long road to improvement.

For the Trail Blazers, this is a huge salary-cap move. ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes Portland will save more than $40 million in luxury taxes and $60 million in salary and taxes combined for the upcoming season. Prior to Tuesday’s trade, the Trail Blazers were second in the league in salary behind only the Cavs, a team with a very different set of issues at the moment.

Although Testaverde put together a good, long career with his play for the Browns, Ravens and Jets after Tampa, he was a bust from the Bucs’ perspective as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1987 draft. The hyped Miami Hurricane was an INT machine as a young passer, winning only a third of his 72 starts with just 77 touchdowns to 112 picks, including a 13-35 ratio in his second season. At least he stayed in great shape to get backup gigs all the way through age 44 and surpass 45,000 yards.dolphins_034

Yankees among winners off the field, then win on it

Monday was all about new faces in new places. While they were only nine games on the schedule, there was plenty of activity off the field prior to Monday’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.

The Yankees were one of the teams to make a splash by acquiring pitchers Sonny Gray from the A’s and Jaime Garcia from the Twins. Gray, who was one of Monday’s prized acquisitions, will make his Yankees debut on Thursday. The Yankees sent Luis Severino to the mound on Monday to face the Tigers and he struck out eight in five innings of New York’s 7-3 win.

After Gonzalez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, the Nationals will send their ace to the hill with Max Scherzer (12-5, 2.23 ERA) squaring off against Miami’s Chris O’Grady (2-1, 3.68).

That led to the hiring of current manager Joe Maddon for the 2015 season.

Sandberg had been with the Phillies, leading their Triple-A team to the International League championship series in his first year. He was named the 2011 minor league manager of the year by Baseball America.

Two years later he found himself managing the Phillies, but resigned midway through the 2015 season with a record of 26-48 and an overall mark of 119-159.

Game Youth Johnathan Hankins Jersey Now that he no longer has to worry about strategy as a manager or focusing on his own play, Sandberg said he actually sees more of the game watching as a fan. And though he was away from the Cubs for five years, he still considers Wrigley Field his second home.

To see everything come together last year the way that it did, and to be able to watch the quality of play, and the players playing the game the right way … the whole 2016 season was a life-changer for me, said Sandberg, who was a 10-time All-Star and won nine Gold Glove awards.

A tweet taught the Rangers’ Yu Darvish he needed to change his pitching delivery

Youth Mike Mitchell Jersey Yu Darvish had a poor outing in his last start against the Marlins, giving up 10 runs in 3.2 innings pitched. A few days after that game, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan said he was told Miami knew what was coming from Darvish because he was unknowingly giving away his pitches.

I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready for the big lights of New York, but I took a chance. And thank God I did. My first year, 1996, you’re obviously playing with some great players. Wade Boggs was on that team. He’s here in the Hall of Fame. There were some other guys that will be here shortly.
Youth Sheldon Richardson Jersey
But just the opportunity not only just to play in New York but just to play with the guys that I was able to play with. I really don’t have enough time to go through them all, but they know who they are. The first year in New York, ’96, you know, playing in the World Series against the Braves, the Braves winning their first two games in New York. We go to Atlanta; they had already had the champagne ready. We knew that. George Steinbrenner came out to say, you guys don’t have a chance. You’re not going to win.

I don’t know if he really meant that, but it worked if he didn’t. Jimmy Leyritz hit a home run late in the game to tie the game for us to go to extra innings, and we ended up winning that game in extra innings, and from that point it was over. I’ll never forget the last out that was made hit to Charlie Hayes, pop fly down the foul line on third base, him catching the ball and raising his hand. I was finally a world champion.
